How We Revived a Victorian Storefront with Flowers

… with a little help from our friends at Mettowee Mint

As seen on episode 1 of our HGTV show
Who’s Afraid of a Cheap Old House?

The nursery at Mettowee Mint, in Dorset, VT, is a magical place, fragrant with seasonal blooms and always bursting with colors. When the paint had dried and it was time to complete the exterior transformation of Bill and Joe’s former firehouse into a home, the Cheap Old Houses team wanted to borrow a bit of that Vermont magic. One call to Sarah Linford of Mettowee Mint and we had a plan: custom steel planters to sit under the windows and serve as home to an array of texture and color that soften what was originally a utilitarian facade, signaling that a new phase has begun for this beautiful building.

To fully appreciate the transformation, head on over to the Episode Recap to see what the building looked like before. (Spoiler alert: it was bad.) Huge proprs to our friend and team member Scott Reed, who dreamt up the gorgeous exterior color palette!

Before:

… and after!

SO MUCH BETTER, RIGHT?!! We love how Mettowee Mint pulled out colors from the historical exterior to make the flowers feel like a natural part of the building, while complementing the architecture.

Once the entrance to the town judicial offices, the building is now a welcoming space for the whole town to enjoy. This cheap old house thanks you, Mettowee Mint!
